KU alumnus Donatas Rumšas makes his debut in the European Football Championship: the highest achievement in independent Lithuania

On Sunday, 16 June, KU alumnus Donatas Rumšas, a football referee, made his debut at the European Football Championship. This is the first time in the history of independent Lithuania that a representative of our country has worked in a continental championship.

The European Football Championship has a total of 18 officiating teams from all over Europe. Lithuania's D. Rumšas is the fourth referee at the championship.

"We are very happy with this achievement and proud that we have achieved it. After the debut, we haven't had a chance to get our bearings yet, and we are preparing for the second game," says KU alumnus D. Rumšas.

In 2011 D. Rumšas graduated from Klaipėda University with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He still combines his work as a football referee with his work as a project manager for a construction company.

On behalf of the entire university community, the Head of the Department of Marine Engineering of the Faculty of Marine Technologies and Natural Sciences of KU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rima Mickevičienė, who was the Dean of the Faculty in 2011, congratulates the athlete on his outstanding achievements.

"We are happy and proud of the graduate's achievements and wish him the best of luck in refereeing at the European Football Championship. We hope that the acquired engineering education will contribute to accurate decisions when evaluating the actions of the best football players and their coaches", - Dr. R. Mickevičienė congratulates D. Rumša.

D. Rumšas says that playing football, coaching or assessing footballers can lead to good results and a successful career.

"There are many opportunities. It all depends on the person who wants to do it. If it gives you pleasure and joy, it will work and it will succeed. We are looking forward to the new referees", says Rumšas.

Prof. Dr. Asta Šarkauskienė, Head of the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism of the Faculty of Health Sciences of KU, is also pleased with the outstanding achievements of the KU alumnus. She encourages people to choose the Bachelor of Leisure Sports programme offered by KU, one of the specialisations of which is football.

"The study process integrates the knowledge and experience of the Lithuanian Football Federation and FC Barcelona. This is a significant qualitative leap upwards in football coaching. I hope that their students will be the force that will make a breakthrough in Lithuanian football", - says Prof. Dr. A. Šarkauskienė about the study opportunities.
