“The students have been selected from all of 120 universities that are members of the Baltic University Program. The selected students will learn to sail, carry out various research activities, and get to know Lithuania’s unique coastal nature. Baltic University Program summer schools have previously been held at other universities, and last year for the first time at Klaipėda University. The summer studies here were the most highly rated compared to previous ones. The summer school has come back to us for the second time and I have no doubt that the students will have unique and unforgettable moments”, says Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas, Rector of KU.
The admitted students will study the sensitive environment of the Baltic Sea, both onshore and offshore, together with the region’s leading experts. Some of the summer school learning sessions will take place on board KU’s sailing vessel Brabander, which will sail in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea carrying out educational research and collecting samples.
Participants will also explore the unique coastal environment of the Curonian Spit and the Nemunas Delta, and learn about the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and human aspects on the unique environment of the Baltic Sea, as well as ways to address them.
This year, more than 200 students took part in the selection process, of which 36 were selected. The students were divided into smaller groups to work in close collaboration for a week in Klaipėda. Each group will collect data, gather expert knowledge, analyze relevant indicators, and learn to draw conclusions to better understand the relationship between human and environment in the Baltic Sea.
On the last day of the summer school, August 11, the students will present their findings to the summer school participants.
