Klaipeda University (KU) and Klaipeda University Hospital (KUL) recently hosted Dr. Gunn Ammitzbøll from the Danish Cancer Institute, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing international collaboration focused on the advanced modeling of cancer e-services in the Baltic countries. This collaborative initiative, endorsed by the five South Baltic countries, aims to be realized within three years. Dr. Ammitzbøll's visit to Klaipėda serves the purpose of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the Lithuanian healthcare system and the specific nuances associated with the management of oncology patients in the region.
During the meeting with the KU rector, extensive discussions took place regarding potential collaborations between Klaipeda University (KU), Klaipeda University Hospital (KUL), the Danish Cancer Institute, and Zealand University Hospital in scientific endeavors (genetics research and the exchange of postdoctoral internships). A more in-depth conversation proceeded with Dr. Audrius Šimaitis, the Head of KUL, concerning the soon-to-be-launched international research at the hospital. Coordinated by Dr. Gunn Ammitzbøll, this research is specifically designed to assess the impact of remote rehabilitation on oncology patients and explore the potential opportunities for their engagement.
It is noteworthy that this research is one of the examples of collaboration between the University and the University Hospital: the research is organized at KU, its practical implementation will unfold at KUL, and two KU alumni of nursing who already work at KUL will be directly involved in the research progress.
This cooperation between countries and institutions is part of the international project "Advanced Modeling of Baltic Cancer e-Services" (AMBeR). For the first time, leading research institutions and clinical centers in the field of medicine from the entire South Baltic region will carry out a joint innovation project to create an e-model of implementation of health solutions in cancer treatment. This will include testing digital tools for patient monitoring and rehabilitation at home to reduce hospital visits and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
